Written by Anna Wang
Introduction
When we talk about helping others, oftentimes the first thing that comes to mind is giving material things or donating money. However, you do not need to be wealthy to improve someone’s day. Whether it be knowledge or time, everyone has something they can offer to one another. Helping others also can give you a sense of purpose and the feeling of connection to someone else. If you want to help others but aren’t sure where to start, here are some ways you can do so:
Lend someone a hand without being asked
Offer to teach others valuable skills they may be struggling with
Be a patient and non-judgemental listener
Give someone encouragement or a compliment
Help someone with their chores
Send a thoughtful note or letter
Express your appreciation for others, especially those who may not receive the appreciation they deserve, such as service workers
Volunteer at local organizations
Donate unused items
Help people that need a hand
Donate blood
Support small businesses
Avoid using plastic
Help someone who is lost
Comfort an upset of grieving person
Promote good causes using social media
Smile and spread positivity
Be polite to others
Give care packages to people that may be going through a hard time
Be compassionate and empathetic
Let others feel included, whether it be in a conversation of in a group
Ask someone if they need help with something
Lastly, remember to be kind to yourself as well.
