National Call a Friend Day

What is National Call a Friend Day?
National Call a Friend Day is on the 28th of December of every year. According to daysoftheyear.com, “Situated just between Christmas and New Year’s, National Call a Friend Day is meant to be a time between these two big days to make sure that friends stay connected.” In addition, nationaltoday.com says, “Between the stress of the daily grind at work, the needs of your family, and ensuring you have a little time for yourself, our lives can get awfully hectic. National Call a Friend Day reminds us all to take a few minutes, pick up the phone, and call that friend you’ve been meaning to get back in touch with.” Despite all the chaos in our own individual lives, we still need to set aside some time for just contacting those we care about. Humans are social creatures by nature and calling a friend can be a good and necessary destresser during the holiday season.
How Can I Celebrate National Call a Friend Day?
Although the name says call a friend, that’s not absolutely necessary. Calling – or even video chatting – would be great, because you get to hear the voices and emotions of your friend or loved one, but if you’re not comfortable with that then don’t worry. If there’s a friend you haven’t even texted in a while, take a moment to reach out to them. Ask about them and their family or friends if you think that’s best. Show that you truly care about them despite the time gap. Don’t worry too much about intruding on their busy schedule; for all you know, they may be hoping desperately for someone to talk to. The holidays can be busy for some but also quite lonely or even sad if there’s a negative emotion attached to them, like grief.
Remember that although this holiday is about reaching out to others, you shouldn’t make yourself feel uncomfortable in doing so. If a conversation takes a turn you’re not comfortable with, feel free to say so or end the conversation if necessary. You won’t get along with every single friend or family member all of the time, so if some conversations are shorter than others or not very personal don’t feel guilty. This should be a positive event, not a negative one. “Let them know they are thought of and cared for, and catch up with what is going on in each others’ lives” is the advice daysoftheyear.com gives.
