National Acne Positivity Day

Introduction:

In a world where social media or top headlines set beauty standards, National Acne Positivity day sets out to break these standards and embrace all types of beauty, alike or not. It serves as a reminder that all skin is beautiful and this should be embraced. Thus, this national day (on September 1st) plays a crucial role in the redefining of beauty and how we view each other.

The Importance of Acne Positivity:

Acne is one of the most common skin conditions in the world, with about 85% of adolescents experiencing acne sometime in their life. Despite this prevalence, it has been viewed as “unattractive’ or “gross” for far too long. Social Media filters and top makeup brands constantly aim to conceal acne, completely disregarding the fact that it is a completely normal skin reaction. Degrading acne is unrealistic; instead we should encourage open conversations about it. In turn, we can help reduce the stigma surrounding acne and promote acceptance of our natural skin.

Spreading Awareness and Education on the Issue:

Along with promoting acceptance of one’s natural skin, National Acne Positivity Day highlights the importance of educating people about this topic as well as spreading awareness. For one, it teaches people that everyone’s skin journey is different and that they shouldn’t compare their skin to others' skin for this reason. Adding on to this idea, people are encouraged to seek out professional help that caters to their skin. By encouraging this, National Acne Positivity Day also addressed the mental health aspect of Acne Positivity. It highlights that it is not “weak” or “cowardly” to seek out help as we all need help sometimes. It promotes the discussion of mental health in self-acceptance, especially since this is an often overlooked issue.

Conclusion:

All in all, National Acne Positivity Day serves a crucial role in new understanding of beauty and the importance of self-acceptance. It highlights many sides of the issue, especially the overlooked mental health aspect, and prompts more open discussion on the topic. In addition, it stands as the basis to the rising idea of “simplicity” in this materialistic and overly complex society.
